This song was originally recorded for the Trying To Fill the Great Big Empty CD, but was just overlooked. I have been including this one in my sets for some time, so I'm pleased to release it to you!

East Texas Pines

There’s a storm cross the road ahead
You can see it for miles away
Cross this west Texas land
I'm amazed anything grows here at all

Been driving straight for 400 miles
Not needing to steer the slightest bit
And the storm’s drawing nearer
With every tumbleweed we pass by

It seems so long ago we passed through
those east Texas pines
There was so much to see ya had to
concentrate to stay between the lines

But we’ve been headin’ west for so long
Into the evening sun
So long our eyes have grown tired
From squinting at what we don’t want to see
But now the sun is no bother
The cloud line acts as cover
I see the rain on the road
As the light begins to fade

We could turn ‘round here
Head back home
Maybe to Austin – maybe San Antone
Where the water runs clear
And the hills gave us something to climb

But the storm blankets our memory
And this road is so straight
It makes it heard to change
I turn the headlights on –
Hope for the best

It seems so long ago we passed through those east Texas pines
Who’d have ever guessed we’d be on this road just a hundred miles from the state line

With a storm cross the road ahead
