Car Windscreen

As a teenager, romancing, taking conquest caravan,
Observing un-chartered life, with the farer sex, me the man,
We mad keen adventurers, enthusiasms glee,
Now & then an old couple we’d spy parked by the sea.
For hours & hours they sat there,
We did not understand the scene,
Just sitting by the beach in car, staring out of the windscreen,
Out of the windscreen.

Thermos flask full of tea, poured out steaming to a cup,
Sandwiches unwrapped grease proof, spam & butter to a pulp,
No talk just there watching, though sometimes hand in hand,
Worn by age past memories, brought forth by views of sand.
For hours & hours they sat there,
We did not understand the scene,
Just sitting by the beach in car, staring out of the windscreen,
Out of the windscreen.

But now I’ve lived more life than then, youths enthusiasm waned ,
This skin of mine slightly worn, fond memories etched & pained,
I now realize that’s all they had, those old people I spied when young,
Whom I thought foolish, to just sit & view life through a car windscreen.

Instru

What to do, where go next, faster faster, not much time,
Make my mark, stamp it hard, not a care for reason or rhyme.
No time to stop, sleeps for fools, I’ll do that when I die,
Thought the teenage boy as he passed the old ones by.
For hours & hours they sat there,
We did not understand the scene,
Just sitting by the beach in car, staring out of the windscreen,
Out of the windscreen.

That again, was me young man, my attitude for all to see,
Was impatience for life’s reservoir & deep bountiful sea.
But now my own memories are made in quieter times,
I drive to places that inspire thought inspiring rhymes.
For hours & hours I sit there,
I fully understand the scene,
Just sitting by the beach in car, staring out of my windscreen,
Out of my windscreen.
Time in circle turns, & every young man learns,
That time does not stand still.
