I Buried A Friend Today

I buried a friend today
I laid him in his grave
I hung my head and cried like a little baby
I buried a friend today
It’ll never be the same
No more fishing on a riverbank and watching the world go by

I first met him many years ago
We were just youngsters, but he always seemed to know
Just what I needed, laughter or a silent friend
We grew up together, through ups and downs
Sometimes acting like a couple of clowns
When his health turned bad, I took care of him as best I could

The doctor said that nothing could be done
All I know is my heartache is second to none

I buried a friend today
I laid him in his grave
I hung my head and cried like a little baby
I buried a friend today
It’ll never be the same
No more sitting on the front porch and watching the world go by

Not many folks at this small gathering
Just me and my family, thinking how it used to be
How he’d greet us when we walked in the back door
A wagging tail and bouncing like a puppy
Even after he got old, I swear he’d smile at me
He’d offer a paw and roll over for a belly pat

Now I’m trying to think about all the good
Times and how he always understood

I buried a friend today
I laid him in his grave
I hung my head and cried like a little baby
I buried a friend today
It’ll never be the same
No more sitting on the front porch and watching the world go by
