It was rainin’ hard, and thunder roared and lightning lit the sky
I was drivin’ ‘round the intersection when something caught my eye
Well, someone held a cardboard sign and was dressed in dripping rags
The sign said, “Can you help me?” He only had two duffel bags

And I wondered how he got there and where he might be from
When he turned around his jacket read “Operation Desert Storm”
And I drove right past him thinkin’ what I alone could do
When a little voice inside my head said, “That could well be you”

There are people taking chances, and people rolling dice
And people caught in the daily grind of their own selfish lives
Well, have you ever gave a thought to where we all might be
If it weren’t for the heroes layin’ it down for you and me

We don’t want to rob Peter, and we don’t want to pay Paul
But the price for this inaction, will forever be---- paid by all
Oh, it’s time to share, if you care, let’s stop and think it through
