THE POET

Words and music
Jim Callahan c 2012

I am a poet / a rhymer of words / A minstrel of mystical dreams
Always a loner / never a stoner / Though I once put my toe in the stream

Not quite as young as the ones they are playing /
Or as old as the ones who are gone
My hands ache with age / the strings try to fight me
As my fingers / they reach for the chord

No one believes you when you're chasing twenty
You don't know what life's all about
You write down the words / pound out the melody
'til you're completely burned out
Then they won't listen 'cause you're pushing thirty
And I still haven't figured it out

I poured out my heart / when I was a young man
Always made love to my song
Now I pour out my soul / 'cause I'm nearing the end
I pretend I don't care if they call

No one believes you when you're chasing twenty
You don't know what love's all about
You write down the words / pound out the melody
'til you're completely burned out
Then they won't listen 'cause you're pushing forty
And I still haven't figured it out

No one believes you when you're chasing twenty
You don't know what heartbreak's about
You write down the words / pound out the melody
'til you're completely burned out
Then they won't listen 'cause you're pushing fifty
And I still haven't figured it out

Then they won't listen 'cause you're pushing sixty
And I still haven't figured it out

I am a poet / a rhymer of words / A minstrel of mystical dreams
