Somewhere deep in the Mississippi River there's a steamboat in her grave.
The Captain had real good intentions and a whole lotta money be made.
See, the war was all but over but for some it was still so real.
For the men aboard the Sultana God knew thier fate was sealed..yeah.
Yankee soldiers poured from the prison and they left they dead behind.
Got aboard the steamer Sultana it was home they was hoping to find.
So many men that nobody counted and I reckon they didn't care.
They steamed north way overloaded and in need of a few repairs...yeah.
That spring the Mississippi River she was running real cold and fast.
Captain Mason fought her every second while he praying that boiler lasts.
When he finally got her into Memphis, well he filled her up tight with coal.
Some dead, the dying and the lucky they got left on the Memphis shore...yeah
Sultana struggled through the water as she tried to make her break.
Captain Mason he steamed a little harder, that was more than that poor girl take.
Sultana exploded into fire and the townspeople held thier heads.
Nothing left to do but the crying while the Mississippi claimed the dead...yeah
