Q: It's common knowledge that country music has it share of "striking similarities" particularly regarding melodies/ chord structure. You've written so many songs. Have you ever been tempted to "borrow"?
A: Yes. The first song I ever wrote, buried in a shoebox now on cassette tape, was based on the same three chords (C-F-G) as in "Green River" by CCR. I felt like the Copyright Police would arrest me and make me listen to polka music for the rest of my life. (Not that there is anything wrong with polka music.) So I scrapped it. Then I came to realize that much is borrowed in our music business, although all you hear on my playlist is original and hopefully not sounding like anything else around. (That is a constant goal for us.) Yet I do like to scout out what is going on in country, rock and pop listening primarily to instruments, you, of course, excepted). For example, the first song I mentioned will likely show up in a very complex (way beyond three chords) production -- country/rock, as I am planning it -- and the opening riff will be somewhat similar in sound to what kicks off "Money for Nothin" by Dire Straits. That, with a steel guitar underlay, will get people's attention fast. Thanks for asking this, Cheryl, as it is always something special to listen to Montreal's steady #1 rated Pop vocalist.
