Derrick J. Stevens grew up in a musical and religious family in Rochester, NY. He is the youngest of four children. At their church his mother sang in the choir and praise team right along with his two older sisters. His older brother played the drums, bass and keyboard. While being brought up in a musical and religious family he realized that he was also destined to do something musically. At the age of 9 and barely able to reach the foot pedal he shocked everyone and started playing the drums out of nowhere. Derrick began playing the saxophone in the band at his elementary school. His band teacher Ms. Chadwick noticed that Derrick was far more advanced than the other students so she gave him solos during school performances. His saxophone skills allowed him to make the "All City Band". However when he arrived at middle school he decided to put the saxophone down and get more heavy in to sports.
Derrick participated in football, baseball and soccer. Even during his athletic stages Derrick was always performing beyond his age level. But of course the athletic stage did not last for long. The interest in music was still in his heart. Music was something he knew for sure that he wanted to do. It didn’t take long to realize that music was truly his passion.
In 2005 one of his best friends by the name of Rufus decided to form an R&B group called Deep. Just like Derrick, Rufus also played the drums and was even better. Derrick then began to play a little of the keyboard for his church and for the group, before he knew it he was also an accomplished keyboard player as well. At a talent show at school Derrick and Rufus stunned a lot of people with their performance. After all not a lot of people can sing and play instruments at the same time but these two kids did. When Derrick and Rufus graduated from high school they began performing at local shows and also doing shows in Niagara Falls.
