The music of Lotus Blake springs from the vision of Mathieu Blake, and occupies a pale dream-world cross-pollinated by the psychedelic 60s, the moody atmospherics of shoegaze guitar rock, and Nick Cave dramatics. Mathieu presides over his chugging, raucous music in a rough croon descended from Jim Morrison, Dean Martin, and David Bowie; yet Lotus Blake’s roots lie not in outer space, but the earthy hard rock of Smashing Pumpkins and Guns N’ Roses.
Mathieu orchestrated his rock symphonies in Louisville, KY, after spending years perfecting his craft. He felt called to music early on, he says, but during his woodshed years struggled with shoddy equipment and a dearth of collaborators. Because of a chance meeting, he says, all that changed, and Mathieu set out on a creative odyssey that has sustained him through illness and family tragedy.
Lotus Blake has prepared a string of white-hot singles for MCB Records. To flesh out the sound, Mathieu recruited a small army of musicians—playing organ, piano, accordion, strings, horns—to adorn Lotus Blake’s rock and roll core. Between February 2009 and March 2010, Blake & co. put it all on tape at Louisville’s Downtown Recording in sessions produced with Downtown’s owner, impresario, and partner of MCB Records, Nick Stevens. Lotus Blake’s singles run the gamut of rock and pop, but each is an urgent musical document that soothes only long enough so that you’re off guard whenever the next hook jumps out of the speakers and knocks you flat.
Lotus Blake, formerly signed to MCB, had plans to take the show on the road in the fall; but in the meantime, Mathieu savored the completion of an exceptional batch of songs. After pouring his heart into Lotus Blake, Matthieu says, the time has come.
“I’m ready to go,” he says, and, so, he went with his band of brothers and played The States.
New album in the works- new studio, new players, new producer, Blake himself, new investors, new manager, and new record Label- Glass Tank Productions.
"La vita è bella." says Blake, in Italiano, and is very appreciative of everything Lotus Blake is and is becoming. He tries hard- and pays his dues, every single funking day.
