Still Shine Railroad was started by a couple of local boys from Des Moines Iowa. Formerly known as Ragged and Ramblin’, the addition of a female voice who rambles a bit, but is far from ragged, required a new name. Still Shine Railroad seemed to be the fit.
Still Shine is made up of 3 people: Patrick Brennan- lead vocals, banjo, guitar, and harmonica; Patrick Draughn- lead guitar, backup vocals; and Stephanie Brennan- backup vocals and percussion. The boys have been playing music together long before either of them knew how to play a thing, playing various street corners and random porches from the youthful ages of 13 and 14. Both are self-taught creating unique styles of playing and singing. Stephanie, a professionally trained singer has been with Still Shine only briefly starting around the middle of July 2011.
Influenced by Pete Seeger, Woody Guthrie, Sunny Terry, Townes Van Zandt, Tom Waits, and Charles Mingus. Still Shine plays old traditionals, Union and labor songs, as well as originals. The sound ranges from gritty folk and soulful blues to haughty spirituals and field hollers. With vocals border lining an over the top preacher and music that moves with the rhythm of freight train, Still Shine Railroad seeks to bring the past into the present, while maintaining the dignity of the old songs and creating new ones when they're needed.
