OLIVER MITCHELL (guitar/singer/writer/) and YVONNE OWENS (singer/writer/percussionist) founded the band "OYA" in 2011 in Victoria.
Yvonne sings in Medieval, Andalusian, World-Music & Folk genres, and has made a study of Western musical roots. She has sung with Punk, Classical and Celtic ensembles internationally. Some band names that she has performed with locally are “Red Tarn”, “Estrella”, and “Leanan Sidhe”.
OLIVER bought his first electric guitar in 1967 while at school in England, then later at University even jammed with members of “Soft Machine.” Dropping out, he travelled to Istanbul where he studied Turkish art and music, and learned to play the "Baglama Saz",(a seven stringed Turkish lute.) Oliver has also lived in Tokyo, (where he recorded at Sony Studios), London, Vienna, Dacca and Vancouver, has toured Europe, and immigrated to Canada 1986. His band " ZINC GIZMO " released 3 CD's,then the name of the band was changed to "The GRUNTLES" in 2009 with Oliver's son ARIF MITCHELL also playing guitar. There were several bass, drum players and other fine musicians, including his daughter Leyla Mitchell who occasionally accompanies on accordion or bass.
In 2011 Oliver and partner Yvonne founded the band "OYA ", and have a CD in production this year 2013.
