Jay Stielstra and Judy Banker / Bio

Jay Stielstra, legendary midwest songwriter, has been dubbed "a Michigan treasure" for his original songs that pierce the heart of the human experience. Jay is an original. His work has been compared to Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, and John Prine, but his sound is his own, steeped in a childhood filled with gospel sounds and his years building houses and playing in Irish pubs. You'll hear a raft of influences but the sound is all Stielstra, all the time--pure Americana acoustic music with melodies that are at once new and instantly familiar and lyrics that make you wish you had said it that way yourself.
Jay has played with a number of wonderful musicians over the years. Most recently he formed the Jay Stielstra Trio with longtime friends husband and wife musicians, Judy Banker (vocals/guitar/mando) and John Sayler (dobro). With John's passing, Jay and Judy have carried on, performing together and drawing on the talents of other musician friends to step in to John's unfillable shoes.

In concert, you get not only Jay's classic songs, but also his inimitable turn at story telling. After hearing Jay in concert you'll understand why Michigan considers him their own, private treasure.
