First before this Bio Begins I would First give Honor, Glory, & Praise to YAH SHADDI ( ALMIGHTY YAH THE CREATOR OF ALL THINGS GOOD ! ) Where All Blessings FLOW ! > > ... "I’m just `groovin,” that’s what RzonYah says when the creative energies of spontaneity and improvisation are permeating his musical atmosphere. And what a musical presence he is, combining all the elements of passion – fire, emotion, and depth. Ronald T. Hension, born March 30th, is one of Chicago’s chief musicians. At fourteen, he began learning to play organ, and in six months had moved onto his horn! The Cadillac of saxophones to be exact; dad bought RzonYah a Selmer, and he hasn’t put it down since. He learned to read music in secondary school, and also studied at the Chicago Music Conservatory. Of his most notable private instructors Mr. Houser, “The Instructor of Instructors” in the Chicago area at the time of RzonYahs’ musical development is most revered. RzonYah gave an impromptu audition, and was accepted to what was considered a talented roster. One day, while Ronald was jamming in the corner during a lesson, Mr. Houser asked “What are you doing; it sounds good, but do you know what you are doing?” Unable to answer beyond “Just `groovin,” Mr. Houser perceptively told Ronald, “You need to sell your horn” and that, is when the work began!
Since his very romantic beginnings, RzonYah has become not just a musician, but also a composer and arranger, composing all of his own original compositions, and also composing for other artists in the Chicago and New York areas. His musical abilities include organ, psaltery, saxophone, and piano. RzonYah however, spends most of his play time with the sax. His melodies are wonderfully creative and conceptual in the making. For instance, Instinct is a composition that creates for the listener, an idea of what human instinct can sound like. Of course, his influences are great, and if you listen, you can hear elements of John Coltrane, Grover Washington, and Oliver Nelson in his atmospheric World mix of Jazz and Spirituals. And if his kufi doesn’t’ tell you that he is a chief musician, the music surely will.
RzonYah has been grooving for quite some time; he’s no novice. With his own quintet of eighteen years, he keeps the whole of the Chicago area tapping toes, and reminiscing with a skillful mix of classic covers and favorites, and an original tune or two. While his local roots are in the best local venues of Chicago such as the Palmer House, RzonYah and his quintet have since moved on to contracted gigs for the Chicago Health Department, State Farm Insurance Agency, and even the FBI! But he’s no opportunist, and true to his Aries nature, he’s quick. Ask him about the birthday party on top of one of downtown Chicago’s most formidable buildings that he did pro bono. Psaltery Praise, that’s his favorite original composition; and the title, provides more than a glimpse of his source of inspiration. He may say he’s “Just `groovin,” but the excellence is not diminished.
