A striking mix of Persian, English & Scotts, North London raised Artist/Songwriter/Producer Raphaella has produced a maturity & eclecticism of sound far beyond her years. Considered in her approach to life & music, the multi-platinum selling published songwriter is catching the eye of industry trendsetters with spins on BBC Radio 1, a Guardian newspaper article, BBC 1Xtra DJ Target’s Targo Embargo & Mistjam’s Radio Ripper, DJ Yasser’s BBC Introducing Artist Of The Week, BBC Introducing plays & live acoustics, MusicWeek’s ‘BreakOut’ of the Week, G3’s one to watch & French TV NRJ12 Le Mag’s Revelation of 2013. Her Reload Sessions live piano acoustics have accumulated over 450,000+ YouTube plays to date.
There is substance behind her music & artistic endeavour, with 5 A Grade ‘A’ levels she didn’t take the Oxbridge route of her peers but relished writing her dissertation on Political Protest Music at University. Classically trained in piano & violin she grew up enveloped in music from all sides, with jazz & classical music blasting out from her Artist Grandfather’s studios - an avid collector of vinyls & 78’s, her mother’s love of Ella Fitzgerald & Peggy Lee, & father’s love of traditional Persian music.
‘In The Dark’ due for release in February 2015 is produced & written 100% by Raphaella. She exotically combines new elements both culturally & musically to produce a hybridised genre of music, a dark electro soundscape of alternative UK pop with Persian sprinkles on a bed of synths. “In The Dark” is the 1st in a series of singles to be released during 2015 following the self-release of her debut single ‘Parallel Lines’ from the sophomore EP ‘Start A Fire’ (Spring 2014) including a Zed Bias aka Maddslinky Remix on her label Koochulu - meaning ‘Little One’ (she’s 5ft 1” on a good day she says). Raphaella part funded the project with Persian carpets she had received over the years as birthday presents from her father who is a specialist in the field. Working with high calibre multi-platinum selling producers & writers excited to come on board her flying carpet so to speak, the sophomore EP explored the introduction of traditional Persian instruments into her alternative-pop sound, completely involved with the production she perfectly captures her dual heritage. Unquestionably it’s Raphaella’s East-meets-West vocal & demeanour that distinguishes her in the industry, whether sitting alone behind a piano acoustically or captivatingly fronting her live band.
Raphaella has collaborated with among others: Afrojack, Ishi, Bless Beats, Diztortion, Zed Bias, Delta Heavy, P’Nut, Ben Cullum, Dave Silcox, Ray Foxx, Adam Coltman, Martin Brammer, Jez Ashurst, Adam Argyle, Kristian Bush (Sugarland), Brandon Bush (Train) & Brit-Award winner Blair Mackichan, who says she “is the most exciting unsigned artist he’s ever worked with”.
An accomplished musician, songwriter & producer with a first class honours degree in Music from the Institute of Contemporary Music Performance (Foxes, Daughter) beginning her course at Goldsmiths University. Raphaella was signed within months of graduating by respected UK indie publishing company Phrased Differently (Iggy Izalea, Britney, Olly Murs, Demi Lovato, Flo Rida, Miley Cyrus, Avicii, Tiesto, Hardwell, Little Mix & Tinie Tempah).
