Delta City Ramblers are a Northern California band that take the timeless pieces of American roots music, the curious pieces of rock ‘n’ roll and craft something outright original. This lush five-piece is lashed together by a sound that is as hand crafted and as thought out as the instruments they play. Breathing new life into the re-burgeoning Americana genre, they take the rigid traditions of bluegrass and country and bend them into submission.
Anchored by an unbridled passion for music, coupled with the love of performance, the band brings intensity, emotion, and unwavering musicianship to two people as it does to a packed house. Percussive acoustic guitar, twangy banjo, searing mandolin, greasy upright bass, and weeping pedal steel all capped off with five-part harmonies make up their velvety arrangement.
Their debut release, an EP entitled So It Goes..., is a good indicator of what they are capable of and where they are headed. Bookended by two starkly different pieces, the tastefully layered opener, “Cotton Dress,” ripples and undulates mournfully along the push and pull of a bowed upright bass. The EP's closer, “John Prine,” is an introspective and backhanded easy listener, which exemplifies what exquisite dynamics and captivating songwriting can do.
As much as they should be heard, they should be seen. With a live show that contains a vast amount of unrecorded originals, familiar and inspiring covers, as well as the ubiquitous tracks from So It Goes..., a Delta City Ramblers show or record is a fiercely enthralling and intimate experience that isn’t soon forgotten.
