Laytem is a 4-piece Groove Metal band located out of the Vancouver, Washington area. The members consist of John Purdy Jr. on vocals, Tony Poukkula on guitar and guitar synths, Dave Anderson on drums, and John Porter Jr. on bass. They have been together since late 2010 and have compiled a plethora of songs that are unique and different, each in its own way, while staying grounded within the timbre of the metal genre.
While currently playing public shows, LAYTEM has several of their songs available on ReverbNation, and is also featured on various internet radio shows, including Anarchy Radio and The Information Subway. LAYTEM’s music incorporates a variety of other genres, ranging from jazz, to old-school metal, to progressive metal and yet still has an original sound all its own. While no one particular song utilizes all of those at once, you can hear a mixture of these throughout the different songs. One can also hear subtle influences from other established bands such as Queensryche, Pantera, and Five Finger Death Punch, to name a few.
Many times when you hear a band on a CD or on the radio, they tend to not live up to the same dynamic level in concert. With LAYTEM, what you hear is what you get, live or recorded! Their music consolidates rhythm and harmony, while keeping true to the metal sound. Most impressive is the fact that not only do no two songs sound alike; they are all rich in sound, texture, and visual appeal. Their songs have a way of truly creating an emotional feeling which is not so common within the metal genre.
While LAYTEM has been together for two years, they are an extremely tight ensemble. Each member comes with a strong, rich, musical history. Tony is the most impressive guitar player that I have ever seen! He can play any song, note for note, behind his head. John has an amazing vocal range, and Dave is able to improvise and adapt to any song with incredible talent and stamina. He is also the main writer for the lyrics. When LAYTEM performs live, even aside from the music, they are quite theatrical and have a huge stage presence.
It is hard for me to pick a favorite song because they all have a different meaning to me and are each unique in their own way. “Control” reminds me of our government today, how it seems the common citizen has lost the ability to truly fight back anymore. The song “Already Gone”, “In My Head”, and “Shadows Surround Me” all have a very dark undertone, but the lyrics speak loudly of how many people feel today, lost and alone. Several of the songs that LAYTEM plays are not available on ReverbNation, but have a strong “jazz meets metal” feel to them lyrically are more upbeat.
LAYTEM is an up-and-coming band which I’m sure that we will hear more from. The talent of this trio, individually or collectively, is a musical force to be reckoned with. I have been fortunate enough to witness this new band on many occasions, and have yet to be disappointed!
