EKM / Bio

EKM, which features Ed Matthews (beats, loops, keys) and his son, Kevin (KORG Kaosillator and Kaos Pad), is a new side-project from London, Ontario electronic artist, Noise Level.
The goal of EKM is to return to the darker, more textured music that was once a staple of early Noise Level demo recordings. Playing to larger and more diverse club audiences in both London and Toronto - and noticing that new listeners were responding more strongly to “the beat” - Noise Level left behind its original sound in pursuit of a more rhythmic, dub-oriented sound.
The results were popular recordings such as This Island Earth (2011), featuring vocal tracks by “Voices of India,” and Body (2012), the latter featuring several reggae vocal tracks by “The Ragga Twins.”
In the meantime, meditative ambient tracks sat more and more uncomfortably next to dubstep club bangers - to the point where a decision had to be made concerning the future of Noise Level as a dub or as an ambient outfit.
Enter Kevin Matthews, Ed’s son: “Don’t turn your back on your past, Dad,” he said, “It’s where you come from; it’s where you keep going back to.”
Problem solved. EKM completed the circle by creating a home for a back-catalogue of new and old ambient music, while giving Noise Level free rein to move further into darker, dub territory. Moreover, it gave Kevin and Ed a chance to explore common musical ideas.
The result is EKM’s debut release, Angels are Bestial (on Woodman Recordings), a disc that should appeal to fans of Coil, Dead Voices on Air, Scanner, Brian Eno, The Caretaker and film/video soundtrack music. The music is at once textured, meditative, yet unsettling.
