Emma Davey & the Monks of Cool / Bio

The Monks of Cool come in three great flavours:
The Coolest blues/blues rock
Sizzling soul and motown
"O for awesome" originals

Vocals
EMMA DAVEY

If Robert Plant and Maxine Sullivan had a love child Emma would be it.
Just as at home belting immigrant song as she is crooning skylark
It has been said she could sing the phone book and make it sound good.
When it comes to her original music it reflects her vocal ability to transverse a wide variety of music. Never a dull moment.

Guitar
LAWRENCE ARPS

Lawrence took up guitar on discovering British blues rock in the seventies and has played over 2500 gigs since. As well as touring as a guitarist Lawrence has worked as a livesound engineer and a record producer producing 2 NZ chart hits for Hamilton band Knightshade. Mixing his early British influences of Clapton, Beck and Page with the American sounds of Santana, Van Halen and the instrumental rock movement Lawrence combines them all in a high energy style of his own.

Bass
MARTIN ROBERTSON

Enslaved father of 3 Martin takes refuge in playing the Bass for “The Monks”
A keen student of anything that will make him sound good martin’s motto is “fake it until you make it”. Picking up the guitar in his teens he mastered the faking of Zeppelin and British blues rock. Mid life crisis / conversion to bass to help out a friends band lead to an obsession with the bottom end and a string of bands and gigs as a bass player over the last 7 years.

Drums
MARK WALLIS

Newest member of the Monks’, Mark brings percussion skills from a mix of genre’s including acid rock, contemporary jazz, funk, soul and blues. After raising a big family and returning his music passions to the ‘front seat’, he is quietly integrating back into the vibrant Wellington music scene jamming and collaborating. Gigging in Canada and on the blues trail in the States for a couple of months in 2009 was a recent highlight and an influential stimulus.

Keyboards
CHRIS BALM

Chris enjoys writing and performing music. His 2008 album “down to the bone” is dripping with references to his police/bowie/80s rock influences.
The other Monks believe this can be cured with liberal doses of Stevie Ray Vaughn licks,
As was attempted on Bowie himself.

Backing Vocals
DEB SISSION & FIONA BUCHET

Deb and Fiona are damn cool ladies with hot harmonies. Their powers combined are the icing on the cake for the Monks!
