Matthew Green / Bio
Singer/Songwriter Matthew Green's forthcoming release, Little Howl, unfolds like a fluid chamber piece. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe described chamber music as "four rational people conversing." While rational is not necessarily a term that Matthew would be able to apply to his daily life, the arrangements for this work were definitely borne of a collaboration of like souls. Picking up where 2007's ...Of My Tribe left off, Green has taken the best of that project and expanded upon it here.
Musically, Little Howl sounds organic and self-assured. Joined in the studio by his current band (Steven Duckworth on cello and Sarah Gliko on keyboards and backing vocals, with the help of Philly favorite Dante Bucci on drums and percussion) and helmed by Ted Richardson’s subtle production, the group has created an elegant and emotive backdrop for Green's guitar, distinctive vocals and intimate lyrics. The songs themselves are varied, but at the core indicate a settling in to one's own life. Throughout this journey we find the artist learning to trust the howl. It may be little, but worth making, and worth listening for...
Matthew hails from the suburbs of Philadelphia, but spent time in Arizona and then New York City where he performed regularly -most notably with the NY Singer/Songwriter Sessions at such legendary venues as CBGB's and The Bitter End. Since returning to Philadelphia he has released two recordings (2004's The Whiplash of Memory and 2007's Of My Tribe) and is active in the Philadelphia music scene. In early 2009, he placed in the finals of the Beta Hi-Fi Songwriter Competition at World Cafe Live in Philadelphia, in association with the NY Songwriters Circle and World Cafe. Little Howl will be released on October 19th.
