Van Gordon Martin has been a veteran of the east coast music scene for over a decade. His remarkable guitar style transforms the instrument's sounds into otherworldly sonic vibrations, reaching new fans and places out in the musical stratosphere.
After an 8 year stint as lead guitarist and creative power of Boston band
Spiritual Rez, VGMB was born! Van Gordon Martin Band "VGMB" is built out of the amazing community of artists and players thriving in the east coast music scene. VGMB makes each show unique in and of itself, while keeping a strong influence on hard hitting R&B, Funk, and Dub Reggae flavors.
In 2012 the doors were opened for VGMB.
A solid run of shows in the USVI immediately followed by SXSW set the tone
for the year. This was followed a by national tour with Jamaican Reggae Legends, The Skatalites. Touring brought the band from Austin, TX during ACL thru the Midwest for a run of dates last fall. As a headlining act, VGMB had performances in New York, Chicago, and Boston.
2013 marks the release of VGMB’s 2nd album “Take the High Road".
This album features members of John Brown's Body, Club D'elf, The Slip, Dub
Apocalypse, Otis Grove and former Rez horn alumni. It also features Justin
Perkins of Toubab Krewe for the soon to be released single "Dreams".
Poised to tour in support of the new album, VGMB have their sights set for
the Islands as well as the West Coast.
The connectivity and good vibes of the players brings a high level of
musicianship to the table. Van also plays guitar with many other projects including Club D'elf, Dub Apocalypse, The Dub Down Crew & Scotch Bonnet Band, Sparkplug Tribute to Melvin Sparks featuring members of Max Creek and Alan Evans Trio, and The Nephrok! All-Stars.
Since 2002 Van has also played on and off with Bernie Worrell, Musical
Director of Parliament Funkadelic and keyboardist for Talking Heads.
At the ripe age of 19, he was hired for his first gig with Bernie with his
band at the time The WOO Warriors. This shaped VGM's ability to write and connect to a deep funk pocket, and play soulful solos in the spirit of Funkadelic. Van has shared stages with the likes of George Clinton and P Funk, Toots and the Maytals, Steel Pulse,Barrington Levy, Gregory Issacs, The Skatalites, and Leo Nocentelli (The Meters).
As a band VGMB strives to bring a high energy show that leaves a crowd overjoyed.
