They are informed greatly by their Southern surroundings and upbringing. The songs are largely true to the oral storytelling traditions of the South. The characters in the songs are the salt of the Earth or the scum of the Earth depending on your point of view. Poor and sometimes desperate. Resorting to extremes because of it. Alcohol,guns,drugs,murder,redemption,escape, and being the length of the long arm of the law away from happiness figure heavily.
