The Electric SunKings hail from the Regional City of Ballarat, Victoria, Australia. The band comprises guitarist-vocalist Chris Barbetti, bassist John Finch, keyboard player Sean Bellingham, and drummer Dylan Jones.
The band’s music spans numerous musical genres.
“…The Electric SunKings are an expansive band who explore a cosmic and original soundscape, often shifting effortlessly from genre to genre…”
Glen Trask, Wordkrapht, March 13, 2013
On hearing The Electric SunKings people make reference to numerous seminal bands from the 1960’s and 1970’s.
“…Their brilliant blend of psychedelic rock perfectly covered all ages with their new takes on old sounds. Being in the crowd, one would just have to bend their ear a bit to hear people comparing their tunes to Frank Zappa, The Beatles and The Rolling Stones.”
Dan Lock, Forte Magazine, June 4, 2013
While acknowledging their influences the band does bring something different to the table.
“Their electric fusion of classic with newer rock styles is so well fused that you can only be mesmerized at this band’s unique and intricate sound.”
Rick Rivera, The MD’s, San Juan, Puerto Rico, Feb 6, 2013
To cope with the frequent queries about how to tag their music the band coined the phrase ‘post-classic rock’.
Recently, the band released digital single off their forthcoming, as yet untitled debut album. The single is being promoted worldwide to radio by Musik&Film (USA).
The band aims to release their debut album in the later half of the year. 2014 is proving to be a year of excitement with the band already having played a number of festivals, such as Jam At The Dam (Invermay, Vic), Rock in the Vines (Bendigo), and Aireys Inlet Music Festival (Aireys Inlet). The release of singles leading to the album launch means the band will be gigging hard over the next few months or so with a national tour possibly on the agenda.
The band has opened for multi-ARIA winners The Whitlams, and shared the stage with bands like Lachy Doley Group, King of the North, Greenthief, Jerrico, Hailmary, The Elliotts, as well as finding their way on international collaborative charity projects, such as #teamPLASC effort for the Willow Foundation in the UK. Music from The Electric SunKings has also found it way onto community radio in Australia and generated international airplay as well.
In 2013 the band went through a significant line-up change and a reconfiguration of the band’s instrument composition: the dropping of second guitar to be replaced by keys. This necessitated time spent on reworking old and new songs with the new format. Yet, the band was surprised to find themselves as a finalist in 2013 AIMA (Australian Independent Music Awards) Rock Category for the song ‘Out of Mind’
The road ahead for The Electric SunKings is bright but challenging. It is a challenge which the band believes they can meet creatively, musically and performance wise. As Chris Barbetti said:
“…we just want to keep on jamming on stage the same way we always have..It’s more fun that way.”
