Born and raised in the Piney Woods of Deep East Texas, Mike McQuerry is a songwriter with a sound all his own. Songwriting has been his passion for the last eighteen years but a part of his life forever. Mike says, “I remember watching the Mac Davis show when I was only five or six. I was fascinated with the songwriting bit that he would do at the end of each episode where the audience would give him a title, and Mac would write a song on the spot. Our family would get together, and there I’d be on top of a picnic table with my captive audience, and me thinking I was a five-year-old Mac Davis writing whatever they threw at me.”
All genres of music from country and R & B to pop and rock have influenced Mike’s songwriting style. He blends the best of each together to produce a soulful sound, which really hits home. Mike’s strongest influence has been longtime friend and top Nashville songwriter Mark Nesler. Mike states, “Mark really took me under his wing in the early 1990’s and has spent a lot of time ever since helping me hone my songwriting skills. I am very blessed to have him around.”
Over the past few years, Mike has been building his catalog and has reached many milestones in his career. He has become a published writer with thirty-one cuts with independent Texas artists. He has had the opportunity to share the stage with Nashville’s top song writers: Mark Nesler, Jennifer Hanson, Jim Collins, Max T. Barnes, Wynn Varble, Mark Wills, and many others.
After traveling back and forth from Texas for years, Mike and his wife Deanna decided to take the leap and relocate to Nashville in April of 2008. In 2010 Mike signed his first staff-writing deal with Nashville veteran producers/publishers, J. Gary Smith and John Smith, at Cotton Valley Publishing. Mike says, “I am very excited about working with Cotton Valley. J. Gary and John Smith are pros who know music and the music business. There is no place I’d rather be.”
In early 2012 Mike got his first major cut. His song "Roll Me Up" was cut by Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson, Jamey Johnson, and Snoop Dogg. The song appears on Willie's album "Heros"
Mike is a songwriter whose talent and versatility are creating him a place of his own in music today. Mike says, “Writing music is something I have always done; no matter where life has led me, I’ve always had music.”
