Whiskey Piss / Bio

Whiskey Piss was born on top of a mountain in the summer of 2010 when the paths of Ben Markham (vocals, guitar, banjo, harmonica) and Brian Coe (drums) converged at an idyllic Santa Barbara cabin known simply as “The Mountain House.”
Humble as the band’s creation was (a bike ride down Stagecoach Road with a handful of demo CDs), the music soon struck a chord with listeners who were intrigued by the unique sound of Whiskey Piss.

By blending century-old folk songs with modern, driving dance beats, Whiskey Piss has been able to put a new spin on some of America’s oldest musical traditions. A succinct explanation of the band’s style remains elusive, but references to Americana, blues, bluegrass, folk, funk, stomp and rock n’ roll are often used when attempting to describe the music.

The complex and trance-like finger-picking of Ben “Fingers” Markham is now backed up by the fretless wonders of stand-up bassist, Geoff Levy, who recently brought the Whiskey Piss trio full triangle. Fleeting as a classification of the music may be, Whiskey Piss remains committed to breathing new life into ancient tunes while simultaneously staying true to the raw, back-porch-rocking-chair feel of a dusty – but not lost – period of our nation’s musical evolution.
