Hailing from Dallas, TX, drawing on a broad influential palate and a wide variety of musical training, Gray, the New Black was born in early 2010. Alan Uhler brings funk-sensibility and jazz skills perfected at Berklee, while Johnn Hesseltine's excruciatingly precise rudiments on the kit are a direct product of the snare chops he meticulously honed while a member of the Magic of Orlando drum and bugle corps. Mike Hamilton's often unconventional approach to guitar was borne of a desire early on to emulate Jimi Hendrix, Tom Morello, John Scofield, Adrian Belew and Robert Fripp by trial and error. Collective efforts to incorporate the entirety of each personal scope of influence and style fuel their ability to offer genre-boundary-blurring, difficult-to-classify, yet consistently themed compositions.
