Jennifer Lisa Vest / Bio

I am a performing artist and lecturer who combines poetry, philosophy, spoken word, and feminist theory to address issues of social justice. I have performed both as a solo artist and in collaboration with musicians at venues throughout the United States and Canada.

As a poet, I have had my poetry published in eight journals: The Canadian Journal of Native Studies, The Fire This Time, The African American Review, Ache (pronounced ah-shay), Women's Studies, Meridians, Medicine River, and Tongues and in seven anthologies including: Abya Yala , Mestizo Revelations , Testimonies,, The People Who Stayed, Fast Talk, High Volume, Out of Many, One, and Face America. I was a member of the San Francisco Slam Team which competed in the Nationals. My chapbook of poetry, Names, was published by Indigenous Speak in Berkeley, CA in 1997. I have four poetry albums: Wonder Woman, Camping at a Distance, Ancestor Count, and Mixed Messages (A Compilation). I am currently working on my fourth album, The Impossible.

As a philosopher, I was a University Professor for ten years, and have written academic articles and delivered lectures on various topics in philosophy including: African Philosophy, Native American Philosophy, Caribbean Philosophy,and Feminist Philosophy.
