Andrus-Shively is an acoustic duo displaying the equally dynamic vocals of Jonathan Andrus and Mike Shively with a blend of acoustic guitars, hand percussion, and keyboards. They are a band made thru many years of individual desire to create music that speaks a soulful yet pointed message with an acoustic twist. Whether it be the free-thinking directive, “Don’t wait for the sun if all that you want is to dance in the rain” or the words “Give in…give out…give up yourself” they have a knack for urging their audience to free themselves from the tyranny of complacency. Andrus-Shively has its eyes set on journeying every range of venue possible. You will not see this band being selective about its audience. This music is for everyone at every time.
They been compared to a number of artists, but is truly a string of influences that combine into a strictly unique sound. Folk, rock, independent, contemporary, expressive…these would be a few of descriptive terms that offer a small bit of insight to the style that Andrus-Shively has developed. However, no combination of styles can accurately describe the mood that the music creates.
“I would like my music to be a direct expression of my worldview. I think that everyone can use a philosophical wake up call ever so often. We are such a busy culture, and people have just lost their ability to slow down and enjoy one another. I hope that our music will inspire people to give of themselves, and take the time to truly know the people around them. Ultimately love for one another is the message with a couple twists and turns” says Jonathan.
“It’s hard to not sound narcissistic when you say something like “I’m looking for another me to partner with on the music front” says Mike, but that’s exactly what I said (unapologetically), and thankfully I found someone that fit’s the bill and more. Some of my favorite experiences with Andrus-Shively are listening to recordings with Jonathan and playing “who is that“ because at times our voices match so well. When two strong minded people get together you get war or harmony, but never boredom! At this point for me the important thing is making music, that I like, and I’m lucky to have found a partner with the same taste for once!”
When you look into the range of musical background that these two musicians have experienced you quickly begin to see what makes them unique in their respective genre. Having played an integral part in the Sacramento rock scene Mike has toured a number of venues up and down the west coast with his previous band “Grey Atlas”. It was in those days that he realized how pointed his desire for acoustic music was. On the other hand Jonathan’s time was spent performing in front of a number of faith-based audiences multiple times every week. “I always remember how much I appreciated the acoustic shows. Being stripped of effects and other types of audio support was the best way to sharpen your skills. The more I played that way…the more I fell in love with the emotion that genre of music creates.” And that is the story of this particular band; a deep desire to expose the emotion that lies at the heart of music stripped from effect.
