Ralph Gresham Lam - Biography
Vocals, Guitar, Bass, Keyboard, Percussion.
Ralph is a skilled and creative guitarist, and soulful vocalist. Singing as well as he plays, he uses his voice to search for the perfect balance between power and beauty. Born in 1960, Ralph flourished among the “Monkeys” want-a-be bands in the suburbs of Wilmington Delaware. Being influenced by his parents, who were also musicians, he started playing guitar at the age of 8 (3 if you count the Roy Rogers guitar…). Later at around the age of seventeen, he discovered that when he tried singing, he could "carry-a-tune". After several garage and college bands, his first real success came with a Wilmington based band “Shallant”. Later he acquired serious blues chops performing with “The Night Shades“ up and down the Shenandoah Valley. Later he played many honky-tonks with a country band - “The Good time Outlaws”. While living in Washington D.C. with his wife Rué, he honed his craft further with "The Make".
He met his wife; highly experienced musician and vocalist, Rué Wingo (Lam) in Harrisonburg, VA.. From their first date they knew they had to make music together. "Extender" was their first project together. They later moved to Washington DC and renamed themselves “Le Choix” after making contact with an east coast lounge band promoter. In 1985 they moved to Wilmington, De where they continued to perform and record. During this time Ralph was also played in his father's bluegrass band, "White Clay Tributary" where he enjoyed many fast and melodic "break-downs" performing American roots music. After a 15 year stint (did we say “stint”...?) performing and recording in Wilmington, De Ralph and Rué put down stakes in the Orlando Florida area and have been recording and performing as “Watersign” and "Watersign Blues" for the last 8 years.
