Martin is a versatile and accomplished musician in many facets. His main instruments are drums and percussion, but Martin is also skilled at piano, guitar and bass, and is an excellent vocalist.
Martin began his professional music career at the age of 13. He studied drums, accordion and other instruments at Burnwood Music Studio, now Watson Wood Music. He also attended North Greenville College and Furman University, majoring in music, studied jazz with Rick Dior and his brother JOJO Putnam who started him at 8 years old listening to Max Roach , Charlie Parker , Philly Jo Jones , Stan Kenton , Ella , Tony Williams and Buddy Rich and the list goes on.
Martin has performed and recorded with many renowned groups and musicians, including members of The Marshall Tucker Band, Lynyerd Skynyrd, The Outlaws, Ricky Godfrey, Stephen Hill, Vicky Bird and Willow Creek , The Cracker Band , Southbound , David Ezell and Ronnie Godfrey Who along with his wife ,Kim Morrison Godfrey has contributed songs ( Ride Out The Storm ) ( I'm Drunk Again ) ( Hat Full Of Rain ) and ( Until We Really Try ) Martin , Ronnie and Ricky Godfrey who has also been an influence , mentor and educator wrote. All are best friends , being as Martin puts it , " Some Of The Most Important Souls In My Life " for the 1st solo CD as well as help and guidance from music city Nashville TN. Ronnie , Kim and Ricky are successful writers , recording artists , session players and Amazing Performers. Throughout his musical career Martin also formed many of his own bands for his original music.
His passion for music inspired author, Barbara O'Conner to write a book using Martin as the main character, "Beethoven in Paradise", a children's book about a boy who loved music and aspired against all odds to become a musician.
Martin is currently working on his first solo album , PUTNAM'S LANDING WITH THE BAD BUNCH at Woody's Hyperactive studio in Rock Hill S.C. He teaches drums and percussion at Martin Putnam's Drum Studio, also in Rock Hill.
Martin says, "My passion and enthusiasm to play, teach, perform and create music seems to grow more and more as I grow older."
Martin at present is an independent drummer and vocalist in Rock Hill, SC.
