Doctor Steve is an iconoclast. His songs span multiple genres, including blues, rock, jazz, and country. But they do not fit into easy categories. His original compositions are generally improvised in the moment, not rehearsed ahead of time. He began playing guitar in the early 70s at the age of 8. He dodged disco, new wave, hair bands, and grunge. Lately he has developed an intense attraction to delta and country blues of the early 20th century. Nowadays he is equally likely to listen to Gov't Mule, Son House, Doug Kershaw, or Jimi Hendrix. He enjoys experimenting with alternative instruments and techniques, and has even begun building and playing do-it-yourself instruments such as cigar box guitars.
