Last year proved to be a big year for Small Town (Jim) Jones. Having provoked a four-star review in Q magazine and Americanrootsuk.com for the then self released Freight Ships album then later released on the the newly formed Brighton based independent label “At The Helm Records”, the album has made some noticeable waves for this compelling West country artist, who became more known after a "cheeky email" earned a session on Dermot O’Leary's Radio 2 Saturday show..
The underdog no more though, Small Town Jones’ career continues to go from strength to strength and this year has seen Jim and sometime band play more and more gigs around the UK as well as return to the inkwell to pen some new tunes in the hope of the next release later in the year.
The honest graft coupled with Small Town Jones' intense and soulful acoustic sound have earned him praise from the likes of such folks as the acclaimed singer songwriters Ray Davies, Ron Sexsmith, Peter Bruntnell and Willy Vlautin (Richmond Fontaine) as well as the Ivor Novello Award winner Iain Archer (recent project Tired Pony with Peter Buck & Gary Lightbody), Jim has opened for Ray Davies and toured with Damien Jurado, Chuck Prophet and Richmond Fontaine as well as now having has his own joint headline tour under his belt.
Here are a few of the reviews he has picked up along the way:
“ ANNOYINGLY GOOD!“ “powerful stuff, absolutely beautiful!” - Dermot O’Leary - BBC Radio 2
"Jim Jones has a beautiful way with a song that is soulful and unpretentious" - Ron Sexsmith
“Giving his songs a wider scope, but carrying the same intense intimacy, as he again attempts to make sense of hope and confusion.” **** Q magazine
- Andy Fyfe, March 2012
"Jim has one of those classic voices and the songs to back it up." - Willy Vlautin - Richmond Fontaine "
Jim Jones is a fantastic songwriter, Big screen reality from freight ships has become my new favourite song this year." - Peter Bruntnell "
Jim has a voice that frames the world for a moment. He's a steady hand in a rattling, rolling, shifting sea of music. Hear Small Town Jones."
- Iain Archer Singer/Songwriter (Tired Pony/Snow Patrol) Ivor Novello winner
“Emotive confessionals and keening ballads”
- Keith Hargreaves, Americana UK.
