Ask April Ruffin anything...
Q: What gave you the inspiration for your song, "Miracle"?
A: Each day of life is a Miracle, just turn on the news and count how many people died today. The fertilization process when sperm meets egg (and out of all of those eggs - I came to be) That's a Miracle. The fact that God knew me before I entered my mother's womb and that He can count every hair on my head tells me that I am a Miracle. I worked in NYC Public Schools for many years and I encountered many intelligent and gifted children who were uninspired, misdirected and would rather plug their ears with IPods than listen to a lesson. I knew that I may only have one class session, one encounter, and I would write these words on the board, "I'm a Miracle, a prodigy, gotta be myself is what my mama told me, Live today for today, try to speak the truth in every word I say." We would then break off into discussion, defining the words "Miracle" and "Prodigy" and what it means to live today for today and why it's so important to be true and to be true to yourself. I told my children that there is no such thing as "when I grow up I want to be..." Whatever it is that you want to do in life has to start Today, practice to become great and begin TODAY!
