Bio
When it all started, it was 2004 and four lads decided to form a band. They all knew each other from school, and had been friends ever since. After a few rehearsals and a few gigs, and a change of bassist it became 2007 and things really started hotting up. By 2008 they were playing major venues, being aired on radio, and getting great reviews. In the absence of a record contract with a major label, the band set up their own label Downhill Records, registered with Catco, as a medium to release their music themselves via the internet. They also began to host their own shows occassionally, entitled T:PARTY, with guest artists from the USA as well as the UK. They also developed a strong relationship with promoters VMAN EVENTS, who have provided the band with slots at The Ritz, Academy, Dry Bar and more. Their favoured recording studio - MJM - and in particular Mark Jones who owns that establishment has provided them with a wealth of professionalism when it comes to recording their music. Not ones for entering BotB type contests - they never win - nevertheless they made the National Showcase with Surface Unsigned 08 with a superb gig at Birmingham Carling Academy. Tom Robinson played them on BBC6 Music, and commented they were ones to watch out for. And suddenly it became 2009.
About
A New Breed of Monkey are a cool, dirty indie band from Burnley . Their songs are sometimes melodic, sometimes fast and grimy, but never miss-fitting. A New Breed of Monkey play a mixture of progressive, broodingly atmospheric indie and energetic Indie-Rock distinguished by some intelligent lyrics, haunting melodies and sharp guitar-work. Vocally front-man “The Bung” is similar to that of Maximo Park’s Paul Smith and in the quieter moments there is even a little Guy Garvey (Elbow), and like their northern counterparts there is a great deal of emotional intensity in the music ANBOM make. Very tight and well arranged, they set the stage alight with their exceptional performance. A truly inspiring band, they have managed to inject a spark of unique talent to an older genre. It’s a compelling direction which sits nicely alongside the current crop of indie hopefuls yet as the same time is nicely removed ensuring the band standout as something original and genuinely exciting.
The band have played many venues, both large and small, throughout the UK. Major appearances include Academy Manchester, Carling Academy Birmingham, The Cavern Club Liverpool, Dirty South Lewisham, Brixton Jamm, ULU (University of London), The Ritz Manchester.
Festival appearances have included In The City, The Great British Rhythm & Blues Festival, Burnley Community Festival, Burnley Blues Festival, Hide & Seek Festival, and Surface Unsigned Festival.
Radio plays include Chorley FM, Radio Sunlight, BBC6 Music.
