AMY KRESS BEST OF THE WEST PRELIMINARY ROUND #2 AND SMASH MUSIC MANAGEMENT BIRTHDAY PARTY DOORS 5:30 PM 21+ $10 ($5 W/ TIX) *PETALS OF SPAIN* There’s nothing better than a(n) in-the-pocket rhythm section, but when you add 4-5 part vocals, a one-man horn section, intricate melodies, and an uncompromised drive for originality you’ll feel Petals of Spain. On venturing on this musical puzzle started, the pieces fit together snugly. The fusion and functionality of the band was immediate. With a debut show coming in December 2008 at Hodi’s Half Note, Petals slammed a show together with two weeks of practice, realizing they were embarking on something truly special. The show was a great celebration, and they continued celebrating accordingly. Lead vocalists Hunter and Nic met over a McDonald’s lunch in London in 2001, but weren’t reacquainted until 2004 when they worked on their first song together “Rooftop Serenade.” Wesley, George, and Nic met at Denver School of the Arts where they attended high school. All different majors, it was jazz that initially brought them together. Jazz to this day remains to be a big influence for all members. When it came time to bring the band together the only thing missing was a bassist. Here’s where you have to appreciate open jam’s, because Wes had recently met a ‘tasty funk player’; Mason Shelmire. Hesitant at first, the band’s first apartment jam proved very successful. They now had a foundation and could hit the ground running. Though this crucial economic time is not the most ideal to start a band, there’s nothing that pushes the band to pursue performing than human connection. “Human connection can water any seed.” What better a place than Denver to develop those connections? Support from friends/family, and every individual whose musical minds are touched is what keeps Petals pushing through. ..“Audience connection is everything, and we are excited for a world audience..." Working on building their library, Petals of Spain has a mismatch of recordings from different studios. Despite the different soundscapes the response has been consistent. Eager to get into the studio and experiment with more of their songs, each member is actively writing as well as attending school. Without an encumbering genre, Petals of Spain is a musical melting pot. “Using a positive approach, each song is its own. We don’t limit ourselves by any means, and strive to do what’s right for each song." The world should be ready for an ear-full of flavor from every bite from the Petals melting pot, and eager at least for a sample. Their energy will have you dancing before the songs over, while their tight and complex vocal harmonies hit all the right hair follicles. Inspired by The Beatles, PofS isn’t sure what the future holds but they have high aspirations. With almost two albums worth of recording ready to be taken into the studio, each member is currently writing and maintaining the standard they’ve set. https://www.facebook.com/PetalsOfSpain *THE OTHER BLACK* The Other Black, featuring Cosmic Slim (formerly of Air Dubai and Petals of Spain) is an experience unlike anything you have yet to observe in the Denver music market. Newly formed in the late Fall of 2012, this dynamic group started with a mere 9 members and has launched to upwards of 24. That's right, just about 30 musicians collaborating to bring you a unique sound and leave you with a smile in your soul. These are musicians that have already contributed successfully to the scene; from Birds Of A Feather, Bonnie & The Beard, Petals of Spain, The People's Abstract and more. Needless to say, upon taking stage - this assortment of artistry commands it's presence. Their act has been compared to reading an old school Parliament comic book. In a nutshell, this crowd's get-up is wild, garish, & funky with fresh attire that makes you believe they MUST have a costume designer amongst them somewhere. In short, they are like watching a cartoon come to life. The Other Black clearly simply loves what they do. Their soul-funk- do-wop mix with a modern squeeze endears them. People are on their feet when The Other Black hits the stage. If you haven't seen them yet, you will. All songs are written and arranged by Cosmic Slim, with the exception of the few covers they perform honoring soul legends Sly & The Family Stone and Ray Charles. http://www.facebook.com/TheOtherBlack *DRINKING WITH CHARLIE* Jack Ryder- Guitar/Vocals Shane Smith- Bass/Vocals Leah McDermott- Keyboard Zachary Goplen- Guitar/Vocals Alec Vasquez- Drums Drinking with Charlie started in 2012, when bassist and singer, Shane Smith met guitarist and singer, Jack Ryder. Keyboardist, Leah McDermott introduced them and they instantly connected at a party in Golden, Colorado. The two sat down and had instant musical chemistry. They jammed a few songs they collectively knew, and exchanged each other’s phone numbers. After writing and working together for about year together to create their own sound, they were finally ready to form a complete band. In the summer of 2013, they met drummer Alec Vasquez, while Jack was working at a small sub shop in Lakewood. He invited him to come play with them and after only one session, the four of them knew immediately they had a unique sound. It was then that they all started working together to define Drinking with Charlie’s sound. After playing a show at Cervantes Masterpiece Ballroom in Denver, longtime friend of the band Zach Goplen, was invited to join the band and complement the band's sound into what it is today. The band has a rock, funk, blues feel that the band refers to as ”poor man’s music”. Drinking with Charlie strives to create a fresh new sound, collaborating influences such as Led Zeppelin, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Sublime, Johnny Cash, Nirvana, Rage Against the Machine, Manchester Orchestra, and The Raconteurs. The band currently plays in Denver, Fort Collins, Akron[ we love you guys], and the western slope. They are working to capture the state of Colorado, and hope that they can bring ‘jams’ and lots of Drinking With Charlie to everyone nation, and worldwide! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3NQ5PhCVIwA https://soundcloud.com/drinking-with-charlie https://www.facebook.com/drinkingwithcharlie *PORTOBELLO ROAD* We are Portobello Road! A Denver band with huge aspirations to make a name for ourselves amongst some of the best in the almighty Denver music scene. We have been a band for about 5 years, playing many of Denver’s best stages, Herman’s Hideaway, The Walnut Room, Benders, The Gothic Theater and many many more. We are a random yet powerful mix of music with backgrounds in grungy blues, rock, alternative, punk and ska. Portobello Road is a strong and loud band with a stage presents full of energy. We are a mature act, devoted to every show! Portobello Road has released a 5 song self-titled EP displaying the work of 3 originals and 2 covers (The Black Keys, and Neil Young). Our original songs such as “Luxury” has been added to the KTCL 93.3 locals only rotation, a popular local radio station in Denver, CO. Our music can be heard on Mile High Music Underground, Denver Internet Radio, KBUT FM out of Crested Butte/Gunnison, CO. Reverbnation, SoundCloud and of course our website, www.portobelloroadmusic.com Portobello Road has been recognized by the likes of 98.5 KYGO, Colorado Concerted Effort-Chronicles of the Colorado Concert Experience, Sports Authority, Go Fast, Bands 4 Bands entertainment, Music Go Round, Westword Magazine, and Entertainment Solutions Inc. We are eagerly awaiting the release of our first full length album. Anticipated by many, the album will soon be available on itunes, CD Baby, Amazon, and Pandora. We are currently still in the studio adding perfection to our sound hoping to catapult some success outside of our Denver roots. Portobello Road is your average 4 piece band with a far from average sound featuring brothers Chris Michaels (vocals, guitar) and Drew Michaels (guitar, vocals) along with Tommy Weber (bass) and Josh Meneses (drums). https://www.facebook.com/portobello.road.50 *BEAR ANTLER* Mike Cooley once said that rock and roll means well but it can't help telling young boys lies. The Bear Antler brand of rock and roll is most certainly full of lies but, like a bad lover, it also has a drinking problem, sweats too much, and stays out all night. The lads of Bear Antler know a little something about bad lovers. They sing about cheating women, lying women, no good women… women that call collect to break up with you. But mostly, they sing about the women they can't live without. There's also a few murder ballads for good measure. It's not always pretty, but when the groove is right, the pocket is tight, and the lights are bright, you can bet no one is having a better time than the five guys on stage. What else can you expect from a band that met in a bar? http://www.facebook.com/BearAntlerBand *AMY KRESS* “The healer told me that I wasn’t fulfilling what my soul needed. I was, in her words, a flower in the desert that had no water. I was starving for something to feed my soul and I needed to make a change. I needed to express myself. I needed to create and I needed to put it out there. The most important thing she said to me is that not everyone is ready to hear what I have to put out there. Don’t worry about it. The people that are, are the ones I’m playing for.” – Amy Kress Life is what happens between the lines and at times it’s hard to handle much less share with others. All of the great artists manage to bridge this gap though and Amy Kress is one of few the with this unique gift. Kress is the unlikely star; the mother, the wife, the survivor, and her story is an inspiring one. They say that it’s always darkest before the dawn and sometimes it takes a traumatic experience to set us on our true paths. After a life of flirting with music but never committing herself fully to it, Amy was forced to re-evaluate it’s role in her life by the discovery that she had breast cancer in the Spring of 2011. The possibility that she might not get the chance to share her talents with the world along with the foreboding prescriptions of an energy healer compelled her to recommit herself to her true passion and the results are stunning. Forgoing the smoke and mirrors that many modern artists choose to cloak their messages in, Amy’s songs speak directly to the heart of her listeners about a variety of real life topics. From the longings of the heart, to unrequited desire, to the power of hope, Amy’s powerful stylings gives voice to the feelings of many. https://www.facebook.com/AmyKressMusic *SEAN WALDRON* Sean Waldron isn't just another singer/songwriter from that open mic you heard about last week from your college buddies in calculus. Sean Waldron is more. Inspired by names like John Mayer, Jason Mraz, Jonny Lang, Aretha Franklin, Dave Barnes, and countless others, Sean produces a sound you can only describe as pure music. With backgrounds in blues, pop, and rock, he brings a presence to the stage that surpasses most small-town acts, and a soul that shines with passion for his craft. He is most noted for his voice, and when you hear him sing you can understand why. His tone immediately overtakes you and brings you into his world. His guitar playing follows the vocals with a style that fits together in a perfect combination of melody and expression that leaves you feeling free and wanting more. Currently working on his next EP for the summer of 2012, he is busy writing and performing, and gearing up for the next step in his musical journey. "I'm just reaching higher now. What was once a pipe-dream, and something fun to think about while I was supposed to be taking lecture notes, has now become a reality." Fresh out of college, graduating with a degree in Sports Management from UCCS, Sean is embarking on what he wants to be his future. "I'm completely relying on God to show me the direction he wants this thing to go, but I am working hard on my end to prepare as best I can for what this [future] will hold for me. I mean, it's crazy to think that songs I wrote in my bedroom are being sung back to me from the faces in the crowd." Reaching higher, and dreaming bigger, Sean Waldron continues to turn heads. And with the direction he is going, he is only going to turn many more in the days to come. http://www.facebook.com/seanwaldronmusic

Q: So, Amy,... What has most influenced your style?
A: Hi, That's an interesting question. It's difficult to say that someone has specifically influenced my style. I love Bjork and everything she has done but I don't sound anything like her. I love Sting, Chvrches, Broods, Daley, Jessie Ware and SOHN but I don't sound a great deal like them. The music I write is just the color of my soul and it doesn't change even if I listen to nothing but rave music for days on end. Believe me. I'd love to write something upbeat and cool or even mosh pit inducing music but that just doesn't come out when I sit down at the piano. I hope that sort of answered your question. :) Amy
