With the 2007 release of Freedom. Alice Stuart continues to blaze a trail for women in music.
With a new band, The Formerlys, a new producer, Jim Gaines and engineer, John Hampton, Freedom mixes all of Alice Stuart's musical influences and delivers 13 tracks of Stuart's fresh soulful vocals and skillful guitar work to her worldwide fans.
After Alice was introduced at the Berkeley Folk Festival in 1964 Alice toured with folk and blues greats. In 1966 Alice joined another musical movement when she teamed with Frank Zappa briefly before forming her own band, Snake.
A noted in "ROCK: The Illustrated History of San Francisco Rock Music", "Alice came before her time....playing rock'n roll Stratocaster in from of an all male band" Stuart and Snake toured the US and Europe with Van Morrison, Commander Cody, Michael Bloomfield, and John Prine.
About
Alice Stuart began her music career in Seattle in the early sixties as a folkie and later became the first woman in rock to lead her own band, play lead guitar, and sing her own songs. She has recorded one album for Arhoolie and two albums on the Fantasy label, before she dropped out of the music business in the mid seventies to devote her time to raising her children.
Since returning to music in the nineties, Alice has recorded four CDs. Her latest is entitled, FREEDOM, and reflects her musical influences from the blues, rock, and folk genres.
