THE GLASSHOUSE The internationally acknowledged American artist Danielle de Picciotto left NYC about twenty-five years ago. She has been living in Berlin since 1987, influencing the city's creativity and cultural development with her art, music and movies, initiating events, exhibitions and the famous Love Parade together with artists such as Gudrun Gut, Dr Motte, Einstürzende Neubauten, Throbbing Gristle and commissioners such as the Goethe Institute and the German Foreign ministry. With her husband, the distinguished musician Alexander Hacke, celebrated bass player of Einstürzende Neubauten and film score composer of Fatih Akin, Danielle has been creating multimedia performances since 2001, mixing music, art, film and literature into a tightly knit melting pot of surreal international performances, touring from Berlin to Istanbul, Japan, Mexico City, through the US and Europe consistently, presenting themes dealing with "Time", "Electricity", "Existentialism", "Foolishness" and "Madness". Their new piece is an experimental silent movie in which Danielle recounts her last bizarre night in NYC in 1986 which turned into a nightmarish dinner filled with terror, strengthening her resolution to leave the crime and drug riddled city of the eighties and also serving as a metaphor for the growing fear and paranoia our society is experiencing since 9/11. Her film style is comparable to Luis Bunuel and early David Lynch but adds an unmistakable female touch to the scenes, lightening the alarming story and adding a touch of playful eroticism. Her spoken word is accompanied and highlighted by the spectacular film score by Alexander Hacke, who performs live to the film scenes, inviting industrial guest musicians to participate. Experimental underground art is the area in which established dogmas are questioned, it is the matrix for independent future developments so now that even the Oscars have proven that silent movies are not a lost art, this performance is one not to be missed.
