About

Alan Berquist, a native of California, started his study of flute at the age of six.  He started piano lessons first, and after watching his sister play clarinet in the elementary school band, he told his mother he wanted to play the shiny instrument sitting next to the clarinets (true story!).  Alan also continued to make piano an integral part of his music background, focusing on accompanying other flutists, instrumentalists, vocalists, and choirs.

His former teachers include Susan Clark and Caryl Mae Scott. He earned his Bachelors in Flute Performance from Florida State University, studying with Eva Amsler and Stephanie Jutt.  His Masters in Flute Performance is from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, studying again with Stephanie Jutt.  Alan toured with the American Wind Symphony Orchestra, performed with the College Light Opera Company, and served as the Associate Program Chair for the 32nd Annual Convention of the National Flute Association (NFA) in Nashville in 2004.  While in Wisconsin, Alan premiered new works by fellow colleagues and composers Jerry Hui and Scott Gendel.

He has played with the Diablo and Madison Symphony Orchestras, and performed live on Wisconsin Public Radio's Sunday Afternoon Live from the Elvehjem (now known as the Sunday Afternoon from the Chazen) with Stephanie Jutt.  International travel has led Alan to perform on the concert stages of Japan, Norway, Sweden, Italy, France, Spain, México, Costa Rica, and Cuba with various ensembles.  He received a Certificate in Advanced Flute Studies from Carnegie Mellon University, studying with Alberto Almarza and masterclasses with Jeanne Baxtresser.  Alan competed at the Fischoff and Plowman National Chamber Music Competitions and performed at the 2006 NFA Convention in Pittsburgh.

Alan now performs in New York City with various groups as well as substituting and freelancing around the NYC metropolitan area.
