Alamantra is a rock band established in 2000 in Birmingham, Alabama.  They perform an extensive, catalog of diverse, original music primarily written by Bobby Shiflett (guitar, vox).  The current lineup features two of his longtime band mates: Kenny Shiflett: drums and Steve Casteel: guitar.  These three have played together in local and regional bands since the mid 1990’s.  In that time they have come to be defined by their organic chemistry that is displayed in their melodic, genre-bending improvisations.  Their work draws from Retro, Roots, Psychedelic & Progressive, Blues, Surf, and Jazz.  What brings consistency to this eclectic approach is that the music is always “true to itself,” to quote one San Franciscan fan.

 Alamantra is also about a Bohemian, DIY attitude that embraces innovation and change.  They have ceased manufacturing cds, preferring to distribute their music exclusively in a digital format.  This reduces unnecessary waste.  It also saves the band a substantial amount of money.  For those who insist on owning a cd, for whatever reason, Alamantra has adopted the “produce on demand” approach to minimize the footprint of their efforts.   In 2003 Alamantra participated in a series of shows across several Birmingham venues to raise awareness for RAINN, (the Rape, Abuse and Incest, National Network).  They have made their current “pre-release” of “By Turns” available for free through www.gimmesound.com/alamantra, with part of the advertising revenue being donated to the United Way of America.

 In December of 2009, Alamantra’s release “By Turns" will be available through online outlets like iTunes and Amazon.  Alamantra is performing at every festival, club, coffee house, health-clinic opening, birthday, wedding and wake where their music is welcome.
