“AJ is a Ngarrindjeri, Barngarla, Kokatha man who began playing guitar at the age of 13, after experimenting with drums and keyboards. AJ’s unique vocal talents were recognised at around 8 years of age when he won the lead role in a community presentation of the musical ‘Oliver’ in Whyalla, South Australia in the 1970’s.
AJ went on to study the Associate Diploma in Aboriginal Studies in Music at the University of Adelaide (CASM) in the 1990’s and formed a Blues/Rock cover band, in which he played for a number of years, AJ was recruited into Ngarrindjeri Reggae Band ‘Rough Image’ where he played guitar for about 5 years. AJ went on to play guitar and sing as one of the founding members in the award winning “Kineman Karma”, another of SA’s great Ngarrindjeri Reggae Bands, where he remained in the line-up for about 10 years.
