Q: What are you thoughts on the new Metallica album being the loudest ever recorded? Is louder always better?

A: Spinal Tap was once the loudest band in England, but they were also good. In other words, louder is usually only better if it's already good. If you're familiar with the 'loudness wars' and/or audio engineering, you probably know that when "flatlining" the waves to achieve 'maximum loundness' in the track, dynamic is often lost at the cost of volume. Now depending on how the track is designed, this may or may not be optimal to achieve maximum aural satisfaction for the listener. Depending on personal taste, it may be a better idea to mix for the appropriate intended dynamic, and simply increase the volume on whichever playback device or system you are using to enjoy the music!
