Jake Student of Your Music Magazine interviews Numerous:

Jake: Numerous, I’ve been watching you very closely over the last 6 months or so, you’ve been up to quite a bit lately. Why don’t you tell everyone what you’ve been up to?

Numerous: So much it’s crazy. I’ve been doing a lot of shows ranging from Sacramento to the Las Angeles area, I’ve been battling like a madman @ Madani’s Hookah lounge in Santa Cruz and visiting the Tourette’s Without Regrets battle in Oakland every month. I’ve been in the studio working on my new album “Chronological”, my free E.P. “The Early Works” and another free album called “Hip Hop n’ Roll: The Classics”. Right now I am currently getting ready for my CD release show at The Catalyst while keeping everything with Soul Science Records running smoothly.

Jake: Ya know… whenever I listen to your music, I connect with it very deeply, almost as if I wrote it myself. Do you think your music has this effect on a lot of people?

Numerous: I hope it does. When I write a song, most of the time, I try to take myself out of it. I mean… of course you need songs which personally reflect yourself and your identity/ego, but I aim to express myself on a wider scope. That wider scope would be the experience of being human, the universal qualities and attributes we all share together. If you look at us humans, we’re really all the same, same basic desires, needs and goals in life. I think the really profound thing about it is, we share all these experiences together, but we can craft it into our own personal version of life. That’s what I go for when I write songs, especially when I was working on my album.

Jake: Actually, I’ve been hearing a lot about your new album “Chronological”, I gotta tell you, the whole album is quite an intriguing concept. I hear words like “Cinematic” and “Epic Story” being used to describe it…

Numerous: (laughs) Those ARE some pretty good words right there, I love it. That’s exactly what I was aiming for, a Cinematic, Epic Story presented to you in “Chronological” order. Basically, it begins with the Big Bang and ends with the end of the world. I travel through different times in our history as humans and take on the first person perspective of each character in the song/story. Think of the album as a novel, each song is a chapter that is a story within itself, but the whole album collectively forms a story…

Jake:    …and you’ve done most of the production yourself correct?

Numerous: That’s right, with the exception of two songs, I did the whole album on Reason. I really didn’t know shit about making beats, so I had to learn real damn quick (laughs). It was quite an amazing experience to craft the beats and lyrics together. A lot of times I was writing the lyrics and making the beat at the same time. ETHX from Metaphisik Records did two AMAZING tracks that I am very proud to have on there as well. I also brought in Aria from Soul Science Records to do a couple tracks, she’s the only feature on the album.

Jake: In a world where it seems like no one is buying albums anymore, what made you decide to start Soul Science Records?

Numerous: Well, I don’t really care if they buy albums anymore. I know that might sound absurd coming from someone who is starting a record label, but it’s the truth. I think albums are dead, they need new life bred into them. So my goal is to figure what it is that people want to replace our standard view on albums with. That’s a step I am taking with “Chronological”, I am trying to re-establish creativity when it comes to releasing music. People will ALWAYS buy music, you just need to keep the methods fresh. CDs are fuckin dead man, they’ve already had their funeral and everything. So back to the question at hand, I started Soul Science Records as a new outlet for soul-infused music. Whatever my methods end up being, I will give the world music which speaks from the soul in both free and paid-for platforms. For me…it really is all about the music.

Jake: You often make the statement “I’m not a rapper, I’m an MC”, what is your interpretation of the difference between the two?

Numerous: The drive, the dedication, and the will to progress. When I say drive and dedication I don’t mean hustling the business side of things, I’m referring to the drive and dedication you put into your lyrical ability. A rapper is much more oriented to let’s say…strictly business. An MC lives, breathes, and bleeds Hip Hop. It is his life, not just his career. Dirtbag Dan said it best in my opinion, he basically said; an MC can hit the studio, Freestyle like a madman, rock a crowd, and then hold their own in battles. An MC is an all encompassing path, you do it all, and you do it because you love it…not because it’s what’s gonna get you paid. With that being said, you still have to keep in mind that there is a thin line between hobby and profession, it’s up to the individual artist to determine where they stand.

Jake: I’ve been watching your music evolve for a while now, pretty much since the beginning of your musical career. How would you say your style has evolved and where do you see it going?

Numerous: I know you’ve been watching…I see you peeking in from time to time (laughs). My style has evolved beyond any expectations I ever set for myself. I’ve become very centered with my writing and the musical side of things is finally starting to touch the experimental realm. I have very strong roots in rock, I’ve been playing the guitar for over 10 years now. Since “Chronological” is done now, I am forming a live band for my shows. This live band will blend the line between Hip Hop and Rock in a way that hasn’t been done before, my way. In fact, I’m gonna be blending a lot of different genres together, just gonna stick it all together and see what comes out. I’ll most likely call the band Soul Science.

Jake: Makes sense, I can’t wait to hear what it becomes. Ok, so….Word Association time
