Bio

A quick introduction.

From its ultra loose conception in the summer of 1989 , Slack Mammoth ran an open studio/squat . We encouraged musicians of all styles & abilities to "come and have a jam" , "quid pro quo" of course ! So this being the case you will find that there is quite a few tracks with guest artists & friends playing on them. To find out who is doing exactly what on each indivual track ,just click on "lyrics" of whatever track you are listening too & then you can see all the info for yourself. ( please be patient , lyrics will be coming soon ;~)

Summary summery sushine vibes.

SLACK MAMMOTH...A small connection nothing more...... Loosely formed in 1989 by squatting, bohemian, poet, musician, wheeling dealing, free floating tricksters, we were in our essence a jamming band and would even prefer to jam out even when we played live. We loved the fact that, through spontanaeity, the audience and ourselves had absolutely no idea of what was going to happen next. We used to rehearse at Ram studio, Dawley road in Hayes, between 7.00pm ~ 11.00pm. The couple that ran the studio knew us very well and being kindred spirits would leave us the padlocks to the studio so we could stay there all night if we wanted too . Well we always did because we just could`nt get enuff of it ! At these sessions we would just jam out and then just jam,jam & jam some more.  A lot of our mates were in bands as well at that time and the Slack Mammoth Ram jam studios were always an open house affair where everyone was more than welcome to turn up, plug in and jam out. Some jams were developed into some kind of loose jamming themes and were always still adaptable and susceptible to change. Titles were given to such jamming themes such as "Zonehenge" or "Deep Forest Green" etc. Live set lists would comprise of these sort of titles, or even titles as basic as Jam in D or Jam in E etc etc...Sometimes we would each take turns to start a jam, with set list titles such as, Matty starts jam,Sparx starts jam. With these anything could be started, from an echoed delayed guitar riff to a tribal drum rhythm or a simple drone on a keyboard. I myself being (Mattydread) the drummer for the Mammoth & back in those daze, distributor of vacant rooms and free food, would say that at least 90% of our live jamming sets were a success. This may of course, being due to the fact that most of the audience, were hardcore biker/ hippie / alternative types who had consumed vast quantities of sherbets of one description / perscription or another. Either that or i had put too much amal nitrate in the smoke machine ! (only joking) ??? ;~)))    Sometimes our fellow musicians / partners in crime would help us out with some very nice lights and fx and on the whole a night of cosmic revelry was had by all, except by those very few who were too drunk to remember anything about the gig. Now we did have some pretty bad gigs where it just was not happening , the energies were not right and it just wasn`t flowing.  If you jam live than this has to be expected from time to time ,you are out on a "musical" limb. Songs were later formulated mainly by Stephen "Besty" Best (who developed his song and poetry skills as he grew into life)and then when Hughie joined (another very talented songwriter / poet) in the winter of Slack Mammoths existence. Around this time songs became more prevalent then the jamming side of things. We taped almost everything we played, be it at first on rather primitive equipment, a tape deck with two microphone`s out the back !  We later saved some pennies in an old tin bath and got a four track and then eventually an eight track. Because of this factor, there is a huge amount of Slack Mammoth material and solo effort recordings that have been digitally re~mastered and a huge amount that still have not seen the light of day. This is still work in progress.....who knows for the future...?  A new line up for Slack Mammoth may still as yet be on the cards..........PLAYING....      ............LIVE JAMS OF COURSE !!! Hope you enjoy our soundz :~))))))))                    Peace & One Love Eternal to you all...                            Mattydread / Slack Mammoth :~)
