Independent Artists: Where is there left to go?

I used to go to gas stations, BW3s, even while I was getting groceries, pushing my music. I didn't like to be so discreet about it, but it looks like either I have to do that or find a place where I don't have to be. Would concerts/open mics be the only spot left?
