“It’s hard to imagine a bar band with a better name: Beer Money. And while such a name creates expectations not extending beyond placid rock and roll cover songs, there is much more to this band than meets the eye. First, everyone in the band is a highly trained musician. Founders Kevin Worrell (guitar) and Doug Bistrow (bass) both attended one or more performing arts schools. New York City-based Vickie Natale (keyboards) has recorded for Sony, and drummer John Barbush plays alongside Bistrow in Akasha, a Chicago reggae band. This opens everything — from rock and roll standards to blues and soul tunes — to endless interpretation. “There is a high level of interaction among the band members,” Worrell said during a recent interview. “The same rock and roll songs will sound different from night to night because of those interactions. There’s lots of room to get into a jazz tradition (of improvisation), even if it’s not swinging. There’s a lot of virtuosity there.””

“Beer Money is your average bar band in every way except one; each member lives in a different state. The group meets up in Alaska twice a year to tour, and then each goes back to their various corners of the country to play in their own groups. With the band only coming together a few times a year, practicing as a group can’t happen until they all meet up, which usually happens only a few days before their first concert. This is where part of Beer Money’s charm comes in: improvisation. The founding members of Beer Money, and even some of their rotations, all have jazz training. A fundamental component of good jazz music is a musician’s ability to read and play off of the other musicians in the group in a sort of give and take relationship. A conversation in music, hearing and responding to one another. Beer Money prides itself in being able to do this, and do it well. ”

“...The band started as an acoustic combo in 2008, with Alaskan Kevin Worrell booking shows with his visiting Chicagoan friend Doug Bistro. The idea was to start a band and play some shows to fund Bistro's visit and, presumably, their bar tabs. The plan must have worked, as the group has since added two more Chicagoans to its lineup, each visiting again for their third romp through the bars and taverns of Wasilla, Girdwood, Seward and Anchorage. Now a four-piece and fully electric, Beer Money are quintessential a bar band, the prerequisites of which are rowdiness and familiarity. Most of your garden variety bar bands traverse the same territory as your garden variety barroom jukeboxes: A rotating set of top 40 songs, country (it helps if the song’s about jukeboxes), the Rolling Stones, Southern rock and Bob Marley. Beer Money covers sizable chunks of that set, aping a variety of styles but mostly mining roots rock and reggae...”
